India, home to vast mineral reserves and a fast-growing, energy-hungry population, is witnessing a sharp rise in demand for critical minerals. With global lithium-ion battery demand growing by 30% annually, these minerals are vital for clean energy, electric mobility, and advanced technologies. However, India relies heavily on imports, mainly from China, which makes its supply chains vulnerable to global disruptions.

To address this, the Government of India launched the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) in January 2025. The mission aims to reduce import dependence and transform India into a self-reliant hub for critical mineral supply, processing, and clean energy manufacturing.

NCMM Goals and Focus Areas

The National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) contributes significantly to India’s evolving energy and economic landscape. It supports initiatives such as Atmanirbhar Bharat while supporting global climate action efforts. Its core objectives are:

Self-Reliance: Reduce India’s dependence on critical mineral imports by boosting domestic exploration, mining, and processing.
Value Chain Strengthening: Build a holistic ecosystem that spans the entire mineral value chain, starting from extraction and beneficiation. Extend this ecosystem to include recycling and recovery from end-of-life products.
Supply Chain Security: Secure important resources through strategic international partnerships, while building resilient domestic supply chains for high-tech, defense, and clean energy sectors.

To achieve these goals, the government is driving investments by incentivizing public-private partnerships. It is also creating policy frameworks to attract global and domestic capital into mineral exploration and processing.

Impact on India’s Energy Future

India’s ambitious target of installing 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 depends on access to these critical minerals. Batteries that store solar power and motors that drive electric vehicles rely heavily on a secure mineral supply chain. This supply chain is essential for enabling cost-effective and large-scale deployment of green technologies.
By building domestic capabilities across the mineral value chain, India reduces costs and dependency on imports. This approach also unlocks opportunities for local manufacturing, innovation, and job creation. India still faces challenges like environmental concerns, land acquisition, and limited capacity in domestic exploration firms. But steady progress is being made to tackle these issues. The NCMM is bridging these gaps and supporting the shift toward a sustainable, low-carbon economy.

Jakson Green: Empowering the Transition to Green Energy

India’s shift to a sustainable, low-carbon future requires collaboration across sectors, with a focus on renewable energy and critical minerals. Innovation and infrastructure development are key to achieving long-term clean energy goals. As a new energy transition platform backed by the Jakson Group, our efforts align closely with the mission’s multi-pronged objectives. With a 7,000 MW renewable EPC portfolio and 1,500 MW of assets under development, Jakson Green is actively supporting India’s transition to clean energy.

Jakson Green is investing in green hydrogen and ammonia infrastructure, including a 300 MW electrolyser manufacturing capacity. This technology depends on critical minerals for its efficiency and scalability. These initiatives are decarbonizing India’s industrial backbone and catalyzing demand for the very minerals that the mission seeks to secure.

As one of the leading renewable energy companies, we are committed to supporting India’s green future. We aim to produce over 0.5 million tons of Green Ammonia/Green Hydrogen annually by 2030, showcasing our commitment to India’s clean energy transformation.

Building India’s Green Future Together

India’s National Critical Mineral Mission is a key step towards achieving energy independence, technological leadership, and national security. The path to sustainability is paved with these critical minerals, and public-private collaboration will be key to unlocking their full potential.

Jakson Green plays a key role in turning India’s clean energy vision into reality, supporting a green and self-reliant future. As one of the top renewable energy companies, we aim to contribute to India’s clean energy transformation.
