PSIT Kanpur goes green with 500 KW rooftop solar plant

Overview

A 500 KW rooftop solar plant was recently commissioned by Jakson at Pranveer Singh Institute of Technology in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. Jakson provided complete turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for the project. Executed under Solar Energy Corporation of India’s (SECI) RESCO model, the plant will supply electricity at a subsidized rate to the institute for a period of 25 years. While an estimated annual electricity cost savings in the range of 20-25 lacs is expected, at the same time the plant will prevent almost 600 tons of harmful carbon emissions from being released into the atmosphere.

Client

Pranveer Singh Institute of Technology (PSIT) is an engineering institute in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. The institute is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and affiliated to Uttar Pradesh Technical University. The institute provides B.Tech degree courses in Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, B.Pharma. The sprawling campus is spread over an area of 80 acres on the Kanpur-Agra-Delhi National Highway, and includes state-of-the-art well-maintained academic buildings, well-stocked library and hi-tech laboratories. The campus also houses world-class residential facilities for the students as well.

Business need

Rooftop solar plants have emerged as a commercially viable and technologically dependable source of clean power. Installing a solar rooftop plant has multiple benefits, especially in a modern educational institute where massive amounts of electricity is required for maintaining routine operations. Enabled with Net Metering facility, the installation has potential to substantially cut down electricity costs. Besides, solar installations are perceived as a sign of a progressive and an environmentally responsible organization. With its large empty rooftops lying unused at PSIT campus, setting up a rooftop solar plant was a clear and obvious choice.

Solution

Jakson, with its experience & expertise of executing such solar rooftop projects at a competitive cost, was chosen as the preferred partner to execute the project. Complete turnkey EPC services was provided by Jakson that included supply, erection, testing, commissioning including warranty, operations and maintenance.

A total of more than 1600 highly efficient polycrystalline solar PV module of 310 Wp rating was installed in the plant along with all other requisite items of a solar rooftop installation. The plant generates approximately 7.5 lakh units of green electricity every year, to be mainly used for various power requirements of the university.

The plant is set up under Solar Energy Corporation of India’s (SECI) RESCO model. In this model, customers pay only for the power produced and consumed under a mutually agreed Power Purchase Agreement. Any additional units generated, is sold to power utilities using net metering facility.

The power generated by the plant is sold to the institute at a subsidised rate under a 25 year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed between both Jakson and PSIT. The plant is estimated to offset about 600 tons of CO2 annually, besides electricity cost savings in the range of INR 20 to 25 lakhs per year.
