Providing uninterrupted power to India’s largest cricket stadium

Brief Summary

Eden Gardens, India’s largest cricket stadium by seating capacity is a major venue for international cricket tournaments including day and night matches. For matches held during night, it is important that the stadium has uninterrupted supply of power. Although power from the grid is available, the stadium administration wanted to install and commission a reliable diesel power solution which could provide them with constant power for powering the stadium lights during night matches. The stadium administration could not take any chances as power failure even for a single second could halt an ongoing match or worse impact the outcome of a match. Jakson was chosen as the preferred solution provider after stiff competition from several other genset players. Eight (8) Jakson-Cummins gensets of 380 kVA rating were installed at the stadium premises to provide the requisite power needed to power the lights of the stadium, ensuring uninterrupted power supply and play during night matches at the stadium.

About the client

Eden Gardens is one of India’s oldest cricket stadiums established in the year 1864 in Kolkata, West Bengal. The stadium is named after an old park in the city. It was built during the tenure of Lord Auckland as the Governor General of India. Eden Gardens till date is India’s biggest cricket stadium with a capacity of 90,000 people. It is also the second-largest cricket stadium in the world by seating capacity.

Business Need

The client – administration of Eden Gardens Stadium – was looking for a reliable power solution that did not suffer even a fraction second of power failure and provided uninterrupted power that could keep the stadium lights functioning without failure during night matches.


Jakson was approached by the client to provide an end-to-end solution for continuous powering of stadium lights. Scope of work included detailed study of load requirements, supply, installation and commissioning of gensets.

 Project execution included the following key activities: 

  • Eight 380KVA DG sets synchronised in auto and manual mode through power command controller and master synchronizer
  • Complete system for grid synchronisation in reverse and forward direction
  • SCADA led load management for back-up light support of stadium
  • Remote monitoring and operation from Central Control room (CCR)
  • All related civil engineering and construction works
