Sesa Sterlite Ltd (SSL) is a group company of Vedanta one of the largest manufacturer of aluminium products in India.

Sesa Sterlite Ltd (SSL) was looking for a reliable power solution for “Black start operation” of their Captive thermal power plant (9x135 MW), at Jarsuguda in Odisha. SSL chose Jakson to set up a 36 MVA capacity “Black Start power generating” system for their Captive Power Plant in the year 2012.

Jakson approached SSL as a complete solution provider. We offered complete Design Engineering, Supply, Installation, Testing & Commissioning of a power house consisting of 12 x 3000 KVA 6.6 KV DG sets with all accessories. This is a PLC based SCADA Grid synchronised system offered Start / Stop/AMF operation during power outage. It had capability to manage load & Remote Monitoring of operation etc.

Business Need

Power is key element for continuous operation of any power plant. Blackout is a total crash of the power grid due to an imbalance between power generation and power consumption. The imbalance of electricity demand & supply can lead to electricity grid crash. In order to avoidBlack start operation” of its Captive thermal power plants, SESA Sterlite Ltd, Odisha required a stable back up power solution providing uninterrupted power. SESA faced on an average 3 to 4 power shut downs each resulting in an approx. 10 crs loss. Our solution offset this loss and enabled a payback to investment within one year. 


Some of the challenges faced by the execution team while executing this project related to, a difficult remote site-the nearest city being 300 kms away. This project included development of civil infrastructure adhering to strict quality & safety standards requiring team to stay on-site for long durations. 


  • The project was completed on-time and the solution provided has been to the complete satisfaction of the customer.
  • In order to manage uptime, routine maintenance training has also been provided to the customer to minimise breakdown.
