Overview

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose (Kolkata) International Airport is a civil airport located in West Bengal, (the City of Joy), named in the honour of  Indian freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The airport is controlled and operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Spread over an area of 2,460 acres (1,000 ha), Kolkata airport is presently handling approx. 2 Cr. passengers a year and will have a capacity of 2.5 Cr. passengers in current fiscal year. Kolkata Airport has become the 5th airport in India having CAT III landing system.

Jakson successfully completed Supply, Installation, Testing, Commissioning work for 9x1500 kVA (HT), 4x1500 kVA (LT), 2x1010 kVA, 2x750 kVA & 2x250 kVA DG sets in Kolkata Airport.    Jakson was chosen for its ability to provide superior solutions at critical installations requiring 24*7 back up.

Quick Facts

            • Client :  Airport Authority of India
            • Project Location : Kolkata
            • Capacity : 9x1500 kVA (HT), 4x1500 kVA (LT), 2x1010 kVA, 2x750 kVA & 2x250 kVA DG sets
            • Commissioned Date : Jan 2013 - 15 gensets & November 2017- 4 gensets

 Business Need

Everyday approx. 1000’s flight take off / land leaving little margin of error at the airport. There is a need for power backup at Airports for running emergency services & equipment’s during the arrival/departure, other common areas including the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) room etc. Any breakdown can lead to serious problems & accident resulting in disruption of operations. In the event of grid power failure, diesel generators power plants are an ideal solution for uninterrupted backup for their entire operations.

Challenge

  1. Complete restoration of power for entire airport operations within specified time of 10 seconds.
  2. Complete restoration of power for CAT III-B instrument landing system (ILS) within specified time of 10 seconds.

Solution

The scope of work for this project included the following activities which was successfully executed by Jakson

  1. The 9 nos. 11KV 1500 kVA (HT) DG sets along with 4 nos. 415V 1500 kVA (LT) DG sets with complete HT & LT panels, synchronizing panels, NIS & NGR panels with BMS integration. These 13 gensets powered the complete airport lighting and air-conditioning.
  1. 2*1010 KVA 415 V DG sets with coil cooler system were installed separately outside the airport for charging the substation.
  2. Recent installation of 2*750 kVA DG sets with ATS panel was installed to provide backup for the CAT III-B instrument landing system (ILS). Both sides of the runway are now equipped to handle low visibility operation (up to runway visual range of 50 meters).
