Overview

ITC Hotels is India's second largest hotel chain with over 100 hotels. They are also exclusive franchisee of the Luxury Collection brand of Starwood Hotels and Resorts in India.

ITC needed a power back up application for their upcoming ITC Royal Bengal Hotel at Kolkata. The 456-key hotel would be among the tallest buildings of Kolkata with a commanding view of the entire city. Our gensets will provide emergency power backup for their whole operations during power failure. The scope of work included design, supply, and installation of Gensets, with a cooling tower arrangement as also room acoustics.

The client has had a long relationship with Jakson, having served various segments like food, Tobacco, etc. and had carried out diesel power projects at multiple sites of ITC. The past performance of the installations & the reliability and prompt customer after sales support were defining factors in the customer decision making. The PMC for this project was L&T who have also had past experience of jakson capability.

This project was undertaken in August 2018 and commissioned in April 2019.

ITC has a stringent guideline for the execution of its project. For the completion of the project time frame of 12 months was allocated. One of the significant challenges was that hotel & basement building was already constructed making the process of delivery, installation and commissioning a bit challenging. This involved shifting and placement of 3 Nos. 2000kVA DG set and accessories to the second basement & simultaneously shifting and placement of cooling towers to 8th Floor manually.

The building had auxiliaries pre- fitted such as like Bus Duct, pipes of HVAC, etc., working space was limited. This required considerable maneuvering by the installation team to correctly house the engines in the allocated space. The Installation work was nevertheless completed well before the agreed time.

Another aspect of this installation "VFD" (i.e., Variable Frequency Drive) to support the cooling tower & pump. The VFD is a power conversion device which converts the fixed voltage & frequency of the input power to the variable energy, & frequency output to control AC motors/ pump. It is adjusting the electrical supply to an AC motor with a corresponding frequency and voltage change in the motor's speed and torque output.

This installation also has a first time successfully designed, installed “Vertical" Water Circulating Pump.

The project also involved completion of room acoustics and more than 300mtr cooling water piping to be done in close coordination with civil contractors.

On completion & successful simulation of emergency power transfer and associated mission critical control logic was demonstrated to all concerned project stakeholders after which the same was handed over to ITC.

Subrata verbatim:

Being once again associated with ITC is a matter of pride for jakson. This Hotel is a class by itself and stands tall in the city of Kolkata. Already termed as a landmark project, our installation here has earned us a strong reputation with a remarkable referral.
